Recipe: Chocolate Chip Dessert Pizza

September 12, 2012

You're going to fall in love with me today. If you've ever had Pizza Inn, then you've probably had their Chocolate Chip Pizzert. If you haven't, I will now pray for you and the things you are missing out on. I will also encourage you to make this because it's pretty darn good. I think so anyway.

I have been testing out these recipes off an on for YEARS. There aren't a whole lot of recipes online for a copycat version of this pizza and the ones I have tried were good enough but missing something. I started out viewing this recipe and following the suggestions on this forum and the recipe below is what I came up with. It tastes just about as close to the real thing as I think you can get. If you try it, let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments!

Chocolate Chip Dessert Pizza (Pizza Inn Pizzert Copycat Recipe)

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • Pizza or Baking Pan
  • 1 Thin Crust Refrigerated Pizza Dough (or you can make your own)
  • 2 1/2 Sticks  (or 1 1/4 Cup) of Butter (NOT Margarine) Melted
  • 1 Box Yellow Cake Mix
  • 1/3 Cup Granulated Sugar
  • 1/3 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 bag Chocolate Chips

WHAT YOU DO:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Spread crust on pan.
  3. In a small bowl, stir the two sugars together and break up any clumps that form.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the cake mix and melted butter.
  5. Add in HALF of the sugar mixture to the cake mix and butter mixture and stir until incorporated.
  6. Evenly spread the mixture onto the crust, leaving about a 1/2 inch space around the edges.
  7. Sprinkle your desired amount of chocolate chips over the batter.
  8. Sprinkle the remaining sugar evenly over everything.

Bake for 10 minutes, then check to make sure it isn't burning. Some people like their pizza to have a crunchy top but I don't. Whenever I order it I always ask them to "leave it gooey" (like in my photo). If it isn't done to your liking, continue to cook it until it is checking on it every minute or 2. When it burns, it burns FAST so do not leave it unattended!

Cool for a few minutes, cut, and serve!

  4. Random Commenter Here. I saw this recipe on the facebook on a friend and was dying to try it. My husband and I literally talk about this pizza all the time so we were more than a little excited. I bought all the stuff and followed the recipe to the T. And thats about where the greatness stops... because this was just an epic fail. Was I the only one??

You didn't specify the size of pizza pan so I used the regular size one I have. I don't know the exact dimensions but I know it's not considered "small" because we eat frozen pizza at least twice a week and use this same pan and they fit perfect.
I made the dough and laid it out (it fit the pan perfectly) and then spooned on the yellow cake part. Unless you were using a pan the size of a coffee table, how in the WORLD do you use all of it? (I even thought maybe I read the recipe wrong and was only supposed to use half the box of cake mix). I ladled on all I could, smeared it around, and then decided it was too much and spooned a LOT back into the bowl, which left a good portion of what I had made originally. And that was without leaving a 1/2 in border. Had I done that, I would of used even less.

I decided I had gone to far to turn back and baked it. After 10 minutes it was still mostly gooey and puffy- uppy looking. So I baked it another two or so. When I took it out, it wasn't done at all ANYwhere except the edges were a little darker shade and a little firmer. I peeled off a little of the edge and tried it, and it was NOTHING like a pizzert pizza (more like a cookie gone wrong). I took a spatula and patted down the entire thing and then let it sit for 30 minutes thinking maybe compacting and leaving it would set it up better, but no.
I threw the ENTIRE thing away. (Which frustrates me because I spent 5-10 dollars on ingredients)

What did I do wrong? I simply do not get it.

    1. I agree! Too much butter. Mine just kept sliding off the pizza onto the oven. I think half the butter would have made it much more successful.

    2. I think it is supposed to be a Jiffy box of cake mix...

    3. I always use a yellow Jiffy cake mix and only 1 stick of butter. I also use 2 containers of crescent rolls in a 9 X 13 pan instead of the pizza dough. Makes it more "dessert-y". Good luck!
